Auditing Classes: Enrollment and Eligibility

General Provisions and Restrictions

Auditing a course allows an individual to attend class without receiving academic credit or quality points on the academic transcript. Audit status is contingent upon course capacity, resource availability, and instructor approval. Requests to audit may not be submitted prior to the first day of class. Once the request is processed and approved for audit status, the decision is final; students may not request a return to a standard letter grade at any future time. Students seeking credit must re-enroll in a future term and complete all required coursework.

Deadlines and Withdrawal

The deadline to request audit status coincides with the add/drop deadline, which is 20 percent of the course. Students who withdraw from an audited course after this deadline will receive a "W" withdrawal notation on their transcript and are prohibited from continuing to attend the course.

Tuition and Student Fees

Admitted students and non-degree seeking students will be assessed regular tuition and student fees, as well as any applicable course, delivery, or special fees associated with the audited course.

Special Audit Programs (HB 60 and SB 0045)

In accordance with Utah state law, specific populations are eligible for reduced-cost auditing:

  • House Bill 60 (1977): Utah residents age 62 or older may audit regular courses for a flat fee of $10 per semester, plus any applicable course, delivery, or special fees associated with the audited course.

  • Senate Bill 0045 (2021): Eligible veterans, who are Utah residents and meet “Veteran” status as defined by the Utah State Legislature, may audit classes for a flat fee of $10 per semester, plus any applicable course, delivery, or special fees associated with the audited course.

University Employee Audit Benefit

Eligible Utah State University employees may audit courses at a reduced cost in accordance with University Policy 3114.2.7: Tuition Benefits. While tuition and student fees are waived, employees are responsible for any applicable course, delivery, or special fees associated with the audited course.
