NOTES: The highest math requirement for this degree is the Quantitative Literacy (QL) of the student’s choice.
All individual instruction courses must be passed with a grade of B- or better. All other music courses must be passed with a grade of C- or better. Music requires 3.0 GPA in music classes and 2.75 GPA overall for admission as transfer student and for scholarship eligibility. An overall minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for graduation.

C- minimum grade required for all Music Education courses.
Guitar Requirements
All individual instruction courses on major instrument must be passed with a grade of B- or better. All other music concentration courses must be passed with a grade of C- or better. Major requirements may not be taken for a pass/fail grade, except those courses which are only taught on a pass/fail basis. Minimum GPA for all required music program courses as well as STEP courses is 3.0. An overall minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for graduation.
Individual Instruction (7 credits) - MUSC 1585 - Individual Pre-music Guitar Instruction 1-2 (first year fall and spring, 2 credits)
- MUSC 2595 - Individual Pre-Barrier Guitar Instruction 1-2 (second year fall semester, 1 credit)
- MUSC 3550 - Individual Guitar Instruction for Music Majors 1-2 (second year spring through fourth year fall semesters, 4 credits)
Large Ensemble (7 credits) - MUSC 3590 - Electric Guitar Ensemble 1 or
- MUSC 4550 - Acoustic Guitar Ensemble 1
7 credits minimum of large ensemble are required. Any combination of these two courses satisfies requirements.

- MUSC 2550 - Guitar Styles: Blues 2
- MUSC 2560 - Guitar Styles: Bluegrass/Folk 2
- MUSC 2570 - Fingerboard Theory I 2
- MUSC 2580 - Fingerboard Theory II 2
- MUSC 2700 - Woodwind Techniques I: Flute, Clarinet 1 or
- MUSC 2710 - Woodwind Techniques II: Saxophone, Oboe, Bassoon 1
and - MUSC 2800 - High Brass Techniques 1 or
- MUSC 2810 - Low Brass Techniques 1
Music Education, Guitar students are required to take one semester of brass techniques and one semester of woodwind techniques. It is recommended to take MUSC 2700: Woodwind Techniques I: Flute, Clarinet second year fall and MUSC 2800: High Brass Techniques fourth year fall. If MUSC 2710: Woodwind Techniques II: Saxophone, Oboe, Bassoon and/or MUSC 2810: Low Brass Techniques are preferred, they may be added second and/or third year spring semester without exceeding the 18-credit tuition plateau. Choral Ensemble (1 credit) - MUSC 2600 - Women’s Choir 1 or
- MUSC 4600 - University Chorale (DHA) 1 or
- MUSC 2210 - Advanced Conducting Ensemble 1 (spring)
1 credit of choral ensemble is required. Any one of these courses will satisfy the requirement. - MUSC 3570 - Guitar Pedagogy I 2
- MUSC 3580 - Guitar Pedagogy II 2
MUSC 3570: Guitar Pedagogy I and MUSC 3580: Guitar Pedagogy II are offered alternate years.
Music Education STEP
Students must maintain a 3.0 overall GPA and a grade of C or better in all STEP program courses.
Pre-STEP Admission Courses
May be taken prior to admission or with Levels I or II.
Recital and Concert Attendance Requirement
To graduate, students are required to attend a minimum of 80 concerts or recitals. Recital and concert attendance is monitored and recorded in the Music Student Services office. Students should turn in programs after attending concerts and recitals for documentation of attendance.
Licensure Notification
This program typically leads to licensure and was designed to meet licensing qualifications in the state of Utah. If students wish to work in another state within the United States, they should review the qualifications for that state and the Education Licensure Compliance Table provided by School of Teacher Education and Leadership.
