About this Degree

The Doctor of Audiology (AuD) at Utah State University is a four-year, post-baccalaureate professional doctoral degree offered through the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services. The AuD is the entry-level degree required for professional practice in audiology and prepares graduates to function as independent healthcare providers in the prevention, identification, assessment, and management of hearing and balance disorders.

The program is designed to be completed over 11 sequential semesters and follows a structured progression of didactic coursework integrated with clinical education. Students begin supervised clinical practicum experiences in the first year of study, applying foundational knowledge to patient care with increasing independence and professional responsibility across university-based and affiliated healthcare settings. The curriculum culminates in a full-time fourth-year clinical externship that provides advanced clinical training in a professional practice environment.

Students receive academic preparation and supervised clinical experience in diagnostic audiology and electrophysiology; amplification and hearing technology; cochlear implants and other implantable devices; vestibular assessment and rehabilitation; and tinnitus management. Clinical experiences span pediatric and adult populations and may include services provided in medical, educational, and community-based settings. In addition to academic coursework and practicum, all students complete a required clinical research project as part of the doctoral curriculum.

The program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Graduates are academically prepared to meet requirements for state licensure and national certification in audiology.

The program accepts students from a wide range of undergraduate degree backgrounds. Applicants are not required to hold a bachelor’s degree in speech and hearing sciences; however, required prerequisite coursework must be completed prior to matriculation as specified on the program’s Admission and Tuition webpage
