It is best to have at least one year of study and coursework before the planned practicum semester. Students are responsible for arranging for their own practicum. Students are encouraged to find or create a practicum that is related to their personal interests and will serve their goals after graduation. The practicum should tie together various elements of the program through practical experience, in-service learning, or internship experience in a cultural community distinct from the student’s own culture. The practicum plan should include at least 135 contact hours. Planning for the practicum early or as soon as the student is accepted into the full major is recommended. Approval for a particular practicum experience must be granted by the student’s faculty advisor and the CSPH Department Head prior to the experience. Students should visit with the faculty advisor early in the decision process.

There are four options for a student to complete the practicum requirement.

  • Option 1 – Global Studies/Travel - Student goes on a self-designed global engagement or an institutional (USU) experience. Both require going through the Office of Global Engagement at Utah State University.

  • Option 2 – Local Intercultural Experience – Student works with advisor on finding a local intercultural experience.

  • Option 3 Global Communication Portfolio – Student may use previous travel abroad experience providing it is approved by their assigned faculty advisor and the portfolio demonstrates they have learned the required intercultural knowledge, skills, and attitudes.

  • Option 4 - Complete 12 credits from the Critical Global Citizenry Area of the major. Students doing option #4 are not required to enroll in course. For all other options, students are required to enroll in course.
