In addition to travel within studios, the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree requires students to complete at least one study abroad experience sanctioned by the department during the Spring semester following matriculation (generally the Junior year). Three options are available to students: Semester-long Study Abroad, Individual Study Abroad Experience, and Faculty-led Study Abroad. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in faculty-led study abroad experiences

The faculty-led study abroad course occurs over spring break. Costs associated with the study abroad course vary, and students will be informed of their financial responsibility associated with the trip in a timely manner. Students are individually responsible for finding and purchasing their own airfare to and from the destination.

These study abroad experiences are planned well in advance, and require advance planning on the part of students. A significant course fee is associated with faculty led study abroad which covers shared expenses such as lodging, local transportation, and venue entry. In addition, students are responsible for and will need to plan for the cost of travel to and from the destination, meals during the trips, as well as souvenirs and any costs associated with personal care and toiletries, all of which are not included in the course fee. International travel requires legal documentation (i.e., a U.S. Passport), which is also the responsibility of the student. Passport applications should be processed the Fall semester before planned travel to study abroad.

Travel Course Requirement must be completed during the Spring semester following matriculation.

Elective courses:

In addition to the core coursework required to meet accreditation standards for professional skills and competency to practice Landscape Architecture, the degree program is structured to provide students with opportunities to differentiate themselves in the professional marketplace according to their interests and aptitudes.  Students seeking a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree should complete a Certificate or Minor in:

  • Advanced Design, Geospatial, and Visualization Technologies

  • Design Entrepreneurship

  • Digital Modeling and Visualization

  • Environmental Planning

  • Sustainable Systems – Minor

These Certificates of Proficiency may be completed within the 120 credit requirement for the degree. Students seeking an alternate certificate should consult with their Academic Advisor to declare a certificate and make a plan to complete all degree requirements (general education, core coursework, certificate) without extending beyond the 120 credits required to earn the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree.

Licensure Notification

This program typically leads to licensure and is accredited by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB) to meet the educational requirements for licensure in the United States and its territories. USU has not determined if the program curriculum meets all the licensure requirements for individual jurisdictions, as each sets its own requirements for licensure and may have additional requirements such as a supervised employment period. Students wishing to work within the United States should review the qualifications for their intended jurisdiction, and complete the LARE exam for that state or territory. For more information, please visit www.clarb.org/home/about-clarb.
