School of Graduate Studies Requirements:

Degree Verification: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university or a similarly recognized international university is required for admission to and completion of a graduate program. An official transcript must be sent directly to the School of Graduate Studies.

Overall Graduate GPA at least 3.0 and no grades of C- or lower: Graduate students are required to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA for degree-program courses. Grades of C- or lower will not be accepted for a graduate degree.

Credits in the following areas are not acceptable in a degree program: foreign languages, continuing graduate advisement, individual home study, military science, and courses numbered below 5000. Students are not allowed more than 12 credits of coursework at the 5000 level.

Matriculation Start Semester: A master’s degree must be completed within six years of entering the degree program. Additional time may be requested by the student’s advisor and submitted to the Vice Provost of Graduate Studies for review.

Coursework Validity: Coursework over eight years old at the time of degree completion may not be used for a graduate degree unless it is revalidated by the Vice Provost of Graduate Studies.

Master’s forms: Approval of the Program of Study is required by the School of Graduate Studies.

Program Requirements:

This degree requires 36 credits of coursework. At least 24 credits must be at 6000 level or above, excluding course and course (Continuing Graduate Advisement) with no more than 12 credits allowed at the 5000 level. Credits below the 5000 level are not acceptable for a graduate degree.

The Master of Mathematics (MMath) program requires the completion of 36 credits approved by an advisory committee within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. At least 21 of these credits must come from Mathematics or Statistics classes numbered above 5000, while additional credits may be chosen from courses offered within the College of Education and Human Services. A minimum of 24 credits at the 6000 level or above are required and no more than 12 credits total at the 5000 level may be used.

Students may conduct faculty supervised projects oriented around Mathematics and/or Statistics education. Past students have worked on various project types from curriculum design, to teaching experiments, to observational studies, to software/applet development.

All students in the MMath program must pass a written qualifying examination. They may take the Advanced Calculus Exam, covering the introductory analysis and advanced calculus material presented in course, course, and course, or the qualifying exam in Mathematics Teaching. Students may take these exams before beginning formal coursework in the program but must take them at or before the end of the first full year of matriculation.
