About this Degree
The PhD program in statistics and data science offers training in cutting edge statistics, machine learning, data science, and artificial intelligence for students seeking careers in academe, industry, or government. This program is unique in that it allows students to explore and specialize in topics across a wide spectrum of applied, computational, and theoretical problems in statistics and data science under the guidance of faculty dedicated to advancing methodology for important and timely real-world problems. Many students work on collaborative research problems with faculty in other departments and at other universities.
Admission Requirements for this Program
There are no formal admissions requirements beyond those required by USU’s graduate school. That in mind, it is expected that students applying to the program will have demonstrated proficiency in intermediate mathematics courses, such as calculus and linear algebra, and exposure to intro-level statistics and/or probability courses. Additionally, the department requires either satisfactory GRE scores (typically above the 40th percentile in Verbal and above the 70th percentile in Quantitative) or a research portfolio as part of the application materials.
