The two-year program consists of a minimum of 57 credit hours (32 credits of academic coursework and 25 credits of clinical coursework). Students complete a Plan B thesis project (MS) or Plan C comprehensive exam (MA). Students must take the ASHA national exam (Educational Testing Service-Praxis test) and notify the department of Praxis results to graduate.

The two-year program occurs across six semesters of full-time study. It begins with an intensive on-campus summer semester that starts in early June. A small number of students may enroll in the Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) Certificate for working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing. An Outreach track allows a small number of students to complete the program while working as Speech-Language Technicians in Utah school districts. Admission to all program options is on a competitive basis.

To be accepted into the master’s degree program, students must have a bachelor’s degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences or equivalent.

Students must have a GPA of 3.0 or better, with no more than one course grade below B- and have met program competencies to graduate with this degree.

School of Graduate Studies and Program Requirements:

Degree Verification. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited U. S. college or university or a similarly recognized international university is required for admission to and completion of a graduate program.

Overall Graduate GPA and minimum grades. Graduate students are required to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA for degree-program courses. Grades of C- or lower will not be accepted for a graduate degree. In the Speech-Language Pathology program, no more than one course grade below B- is allowed. Students must also meet all program competencies and submit a national certification exam score to graduate with this degree.

Course Number Acceptability. The Program of Study for a master’s degree or a doctoral degree, if the student has a master’s degree, must include credits at the level of 6000 or above. Credits in the following areas are not acceptable in a degree program: foreign languages (unless included in an approved Program of Study), continuing graduate advisement, individual home study, military science, and courses numbered below 6000.

Matriculation Start Semester. A master’s degree must be completed within six years of entering the degree program. Additional time may be requested by the student’s committee and submitted to the Vice Provost of Graduate Studies for review
