Completion of at least 21 credits of electives, including at least 12 credits in one of three approved major specialization areas (Demography, Environment & Community, and Social Inequality) and at least 9 credits of additional electives
Classes not listed below (i.e. relevant courses from another program or department) may be applied toward the PhD elective requirement but must be authorized by the Graduate Program Director and/or Major Professor and included in an approved Program of Study. Students may also take up to 6 credits of 6000- or 7000-level credits outside of sociology. Any sociology course at the 6000-level or higher that has not been applied to the theory, methods, or major requirement can be used as an additional elective but also must be authorized by the Graduate Program Director and/or Major Professor and included in an approved Program of Study.
Credits in the following areas are not acceptable in a degree program: foreign languages (unless included in an approved Program of Study), continuing graduate advisement, individual home study, military science, and courses numbered below 6000.
Coursework in the three established specialization areas are as follows:
Completion of 12-21 total credits of dissertation research.
Students entering the Sociology PhD program with a Bachelor's Degree must concurrently enroll in the Sociology MS program and complete all MS program requirements.
No later than the 5th semester of their program, bachelor’s-level students must have successfully completed all MS coursework requirements and write and defend a master’s thesis proposal and thesis before their supervisory committee. Students will only be allowed to continue in the PhD program upon successful completion of a master’s thesis and receipt of master's degree.

Coursework applied toward Theory and/or Methods requirements may not also be applied to Elective Coursework Requirements.
