About this Degree

The Theatre Arts Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree is a theatre design program. This is a hands-on degree with production shop work as well as course and show production work. This program is only offered on the USU Logan campus and is designed for the student to be in residency on campus.

The primary design area specializations offered are: Scenic Design, Lighting Design and Costume Design. The degree includes a secondary design specialization, chosen by the student in conjunction with their committee and program advisor. Secondary options include an additional primary design area, or course and production work in the areas of costume construction/management, projection design, properties design, or technical direction.

Committee members work with students to craft a program that is uniquely tailored to each individual’s career goals. Students learn how to work in a collaborative environment with directors, designers and performers. All students in the Theatre Arts MFA program complete the Plan B option instead of a Thesis.

Admission Requirements for this Program

Admission requirements can be found on the USU School of Graduate Studies website (gradschool.usu.edu/admissions/policies). Applicants who have received their undergraduate training in a discipline other than theatre will be expected to meet a proficiency equivalent to that of USU Theatre Arts graduates.  This may require the student to complete undergraduate level courses as deemed appropriate by the students committee, with a minimum accepted grade of B-.  These courses do not count towards the graduate degree and are not covered by assistantship money.
