Theatre Arts - MFA

Complete 2 credits each semester.

Students will take a minimum of 6 credits of courses outside the department (5000-level or above) to develop skills or increase knowledge in a field related to their area of specialization. Courses are subject to approval by the Graduate Study Committee. Courses can be in art, engineering and technology education, furniture construction or cabinetry, welding, or landscape architecture. Students may petition their committee to take coursework in other disciplines, upon justification of relevance to the course of study.

Students will complete a minimum of 4 separate production projects.

The option to cancel a student project, or to allow work to proceed but disqualify it as an MFA project based upon insufficient preparation or validity, rests with  the department’s Graduate Study Committee, the student’s Supervisory Committee chairperson (advisor), and the Department Head/Artistic Director of the Theatre Arts Department. This rule is designed to protect the priorities of the department and the integrity of its productions.

Two separate internships, related to the student's Program of Study, to be taken during summers at recognized professional theatre companies, are required. All internship must be approved by the Supervisory Committee prior to accepting the internship.

A letter of satisfactory performance from the appropriate company supervisor and other required documentation should be submitted to the student's program area advisor at the end of the internship.
