About this Degree

From the US to Europe to South America, graduates in Portuguese find roles in global business, healthcare, translation and interpretation, localization, teaching and education, NGOs and non-profits, development, security, intelligence, and diplomacy spheres.

Students in the USU Portuguese program may take courses ranging from Business Portuguese to Healthcare Translation and Interpretation to Brazilian Media, and beyond. Students explore the many cultures and countries of the Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) world. Free tutoring, an active student Portuguese Club with many cultural and culinary activities, scholarship opportunities, and study abroad opportunities in Brazil or Portugal are available for students of Portuguese at USU. Students build skills in communication, analysis, problem solving, critical thinking, and cultural competence.

Many students with prior language experience choose a World Languages & Cultures major, or World Languages & Cultures as a dual major, to further develop and showcase their language skills to employers. DLI (Dual Language Immersion)/Bridge/AP (Advanced Placement)/IB language students, returned missionaries with language experience, heritage speakers, bilingual students, members of the military with language experience, and study abroad participants, often select a World Languages & Cultures major or as a dual major. Please contact your advisor for more information.
